Auriculotherapy and acupuncture: benefits, how they work and complementarity
Auriculotherapy, a treatment from traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), is a method of stimulating acupuncture points located on the ear to relieve various disorders and pain. In addition to acupuncture, auriculotherapy offers many benefits to improve physical and mental health. In this article, we will explore the principles of auriculotherapy, its functioning, its advantages, and why it constitutes an effective complementary therapeutic option to acupuncture.

What is auriculotherapy? Definition and history
Auriculotherapy is based on the idea that the ear is a "microsystem" representing the whole human body. Each ear point corresponds to a specific area of our organism. This approach makes it possible to treat conditions by stimulating these points, by rebalancing vital energy and by regenerating bodily functions.

The history of auriculotherapy and its principles
This method was formalized in the 1950s by the French doctor Paul Nogier, but its roots date back to traditional Chinese medicine, which associates meridians and acupuncture points to the ear. In Chinese medicine, the ear is considered as a miniature projection of the whole body, where each area corresponds to an organ or a part of the body. This makes it possible to treat various ailments by stimulating these specific points using suitable techniques.
How does auriculotherapy work?
Auriculotherapy sessions consist of locating and stimulating specific points on the ear. These points, associated with body parts (organs, joints, systems), are activated to treat physical or emotional disorders. Treatment can be done using:
- Fine needles : similar to those of acupuncture, they are placed on precise points of the ear.
- Semi-Permanent ASP needles : these are intradermal needles that can stay for several days on the ear for a prolonged effect.
- Ear seeds : fixed on the ear for soft stimulation to be applied regularly.
- Electrostimulation : small electrical pulses applied to auricular acupuncture points.
These methods make it possible to intervene in a targeted manner to restore the body's energy balance.
Here are 2 auriculotherapy maps (open in a new tab to see them in large format) where we can see the areas corresponding to the organs and those corresponding to a part of the body such as the lumbar-sacral vertebrae:

Here are 2 simplified illustrative examples:
For a person who has pain on the right shoulder when tired, it will be possible to place auriculotherapy seeds on Shenmen, Spleen and shoulder points on the left ear. This will allow, in addition to the treatment in acupuncture or Chinese massage, to alleviate the pain.
For a person who suffers from insomnia with difficulty falling asleep and who has agitated dreams and nightmares, it will be possible to put auriculotherapy seeds on Shenmen, Heart and Liver points.
Shenmen point is often used, it will also be found in the treatment of addictions. Although it has the same name, it should be noted that it is different from the acupuncture point ShenMen.
The main health benefits of auriculotherapy
Auriculotherapy can treat a wide range of symptoms and disorders. Here are some of the most common benefits of this practice:
- Pain relief : Auriculotherapy is particularly effective in the treatment of acute and chronic pain, whether it is lower back pain, migraines or joint pain (neck, tennis elbow, sciatica, knee...).
- Stress and anxiety reduction : It helps to calm the mind by regulating energy imbalances, thus reducing the symptoms of stress, anxiety and tension.
- Sleep improvement : By promoting relaxation, auriculotherapy contributes to treating sleep disorders, such as insomnia.
- Smoking cessation and addictions : This method is used to help people quit smoking, by reducing the desire to smoke and by supporting the process of detoxification (see NADA Protocol).
- Improved digestion and blood circulation : It can also be used to stimulate digestion and improve blood circulation, by rebalancing body energies.
Auriculotherapy and acupuncture: How do these two practices complement each other?
Acupuncture and auriculotherapy complement each other perfectly. While acupuncture acts on acupuncture points located all over the body to balance energy, auriculotherapy focuses on specific points on the ear, allowing more targeted and sometimes faster treatment. Their combination maximizes profits by improving the flow of energy and by rebalancing bodily functions.
For example, for a patient with chronic pain and stress, an acupuncture session could be followed by auricular stimulation to quickly relieve tensions and strengthen the therapeutic effect.
When can auriculotherapy be integrated into an acupuncture session?
Auriculotherapy is not a service that I offer independently. As a purchaser, I integrate it into my acupuncture sessions when it is deemed necessary and beneficial for the patient. Depending on the symptoms or energy imbalances identified during consultation, auriculotherapy can be used in addition to acupuncture to strengthen the effects of the session and offer better treatment. It is particularly useful for stress, anxiety, pain-related disorders or sleep problems.
Why try auriculotherapy in addition to acupuncture?
In addition to acupuncture, auriculotherapy is an extremely beneficial technique for relieving chronic pain, reducing stress and anxiety, improving sleep and helping smoking cessation. If you come for an acupuncture session, auriculotherapy may be integrated into your treatment in order to allow you to benefit from a faster relief and a more sustainable effect.
